Volkswagen Group is a worldwide leader in the field of low-consumption, low-emission powertrains. In fact, in the 2010 comprehensive environmental rankings published by the Union of Concerned Scientists, Volkswagen tied Toyota for the lowest smog-forming pollutant emissions.
Our TDI and TFSI® engines combine small engine capacity, direct injection and turbo charging to reduce consumption without compromising performance. The elegant Touareg Hybrid is already on the market, with the Audi Q5 Hybrid and Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid set to follow in 2012. We are also introducing integrated powertrain and after-treatment systems to drastically reduce nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, volatile hydrocarbon and particulate emissions.
In addition to optimizing the drivetrain, Volkswagen Group of America is testing and developing innovative approaches that help reduce consumption without sacrificing performance.
For example, a start-stop-system can conserve gas by turning off the engine when it is not needed — as soon as the car stops. A push on the accelerator turns the engine back on immediately. In recuperation, electricity is generated from the energy released during braking. What’s usually lost in the form of heat generated by friction is instead transferred to the engine, using a generator. This has a significant impact on both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, especially for hybrid models.
